About The Class

The Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) Course for Cuppers is a two-day professional update for coffee cuppers, during which they will learn and become familiarized with the SCA’s new Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) as a tool to evaluate coffee’s value. The course is full of hands-on activities to demonstrate the elements of CVA, including several cuppings, lectures, and periods of discussion.
After completing the CVA Course for Cuppers, participants will be able to use and integrate the SCA Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) tools into their cupping practice. Throughout the course, participants will learn to:
Identify and utilize the new CVA sensory references.
Explain the function and background of key sensory assessment tools used in CVA – 15-point intensity scales, CATA lists, and hedonic scales.
Use the CVA Descriptive and Affective Forms to describe and evaluate coffee.
Explain and use the new CVA system, including the descriptive, affective, and extrinsic evaluation tools.
This course is for current cuppers who utilize the 2004 SCA cupping protocol , including but not limited to: professional cuppers, Q Arabica Graders or former Q Arabica Graders, people who use the SCA cupping system at least once a month or have used it intensively at some point in the past few years.
There are four tests in this course (written exam; identification of olfactory references; descriptive assessment, and affective assessment). Upon successful completion of all course tasks, you will receive a certificate of acknowledgement. This certificate attests you have learned CVA at an SCA-sanctioned event and can use it as a professional tool. The certificate does NOT attest you are a cupper, nor does it provide any qualification thereof.

A simple lunch consisting of ingredients for sandwiches or salads will be available but individuals are welcome to go out to lunch or order delivery from one of the many local restaurants.

CLASS CAPACITY: 18 students

SCA course certificate is included in the class cost.

About The Instructor

Thomas Ameloot

Instructor

Coffee has been a part of my life for a really long time. From a very early age, my dad would bring back coffee from his world travels and I found it so intriguing. I also got the travel bug, and after college I moved to Mali, West Africa for two years to focus on international development work. Upon returning from Mali, I attended graduate school and earned a double masters in Intercultural Studies and Theology. I worked with Willem Boot, and the Boot Coffee Team, as a quality consultant and trainer for 7 years. Now, I'm a licensed Q Grader Instructor, as well as a Certified Instructional Trainer for the Specialty Coffee Association of America. My life-long admiration for coffee, along with my education and experience abroad, provide the perfect framework for a successful career in the coffee industry.
