Fresh crop coffee from Ethiopia is almost here! As we all know, Ethiopian coffees are highly sought after for their unique flavor profiles. With coffees ranging from floral and citrus notes to tropical and berry-like flavors, they’re almost irreplaceable. Many of you are seeking the freshest coffees available, so Joe Borg is here to update you on availability and share some of his picks for upcoming Ethiopian arrivals!
Every year, our expectations get higher as we wait patiently for the first few lots of coffee from Ethiopia to arrive, knowing that the flavors will be even more pronounced and complex than a cup from the prior crop. You just can’t beat it!
Unfortunately, Ethiopia has been affected by strife in and out of its borders over the years. This year has been particularly noteworthy due to the ongoing conflict in the Red Sea. Three months ago, we published a blog discussing that conflict and its affect on upcoming arrivals. Since then, not much has changed. Bookings are still getting cancelled, container availability is tight, and coffee is moving slowly from ports to the east coast of the United States.
With the flow of coffee from Ethiopia continuously being disrupted, we recommend the following courses of action to secure your forward needs:
On a brighter note, Royal New York has been working on strengthening traceability to highlight the nuances of single farmer coffees. This year, we’ll have a range of differently processed coffees from single producers, including washed, honey, natural, and more. When we select these coffees, we look for “higher end” attributes, including a cupping score of 87+ and the intense floral, citrusy, berry, and tropical notes that amaze all of us. Shito Hailemariam produced this natural anaerobic lot and is from the Bona Zuria district in Sidama. An experienced farmer, she comes from a family of coffee producers and has been working in coffee production for 28 years. Home to her husband and 4 children, Shito’s farm grows many coffee varieties under a number of different shade trees.
This honey lot comes to us from producer Gobena Geleglo from the Uraga district in Guji. He’s an active farmer who comes from a family of coffee growers and has been working in the industry for 17 years. To produce this year’s lot, Gobena carefully picked fully ripe cherry from trees that were planted in 2007 and have been tended to ever since.
Coming soon from Guji, a distant and heavily forested swath of land stretching southeast through the lower corner of the massive Oromia region. This natural lot is produced by the Shakiso Washing Station where approximately 137 farmers deliver their cherries after being grown on farms that average 2 hectares of land.
The GERA Estate is located in the Djimma region of Ethiopia, located at altitudes averaging over 2000masl. A combination of this altitude and the nitrogen-rich plants and natural fertilizers used on the estate provides excellent growing conditions for specialty coffee, including this upcoming natural anaerobic lot.
This washed lot is produced in Irgachefe, also known as Yirgacheffe. A major town in southern central Ethiopia, Yirgacheffe is located in the Gedeo Zone and is one of the most famous coffee-growing regions in the country. Konga is an area in Yirgacheffe known for producing particularly fine coffees, making sense that this lot is so exceptional!
Kochere is a district within the well-known Yirgacheffe coffee-growing region of Ethiopia. With iron-rich acidic soil and high altitudes, the growing conditions in Kochere are ideal for growing specialty coffee. Therefore, the Kochere district is known for producing some of the most lively coffees in the region.

The Sidama Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union (SCFCU) was founded in 2001 to represent coffee-producing cooperatives located throughout the Sidama Zone of Southern Ethiopia. They sourced this washed lot from family-owned farms organized around the Shoye Cooperative in the Dale district.
Established in 1999, the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU) quickly became the largest Fair Trade coffee producer in Ethiopia. Now, Oromia focuses on 100% organic production and has over 7,000 members that are Fair Trade certified. With unique flavors and aromas in the cup, this natural lot is sure to please!
Overall, this is just a small sampling of what is to come! As we continue to cup offers from various sources, our offerings list will increase. Furthermore, many of these potential coffees include additional organic lots from smaller producer groups and larger cooperatives.
